“Be Cool Be Nice” Interactive Book and App

Gerry DeVeaux’s collaborative, art-driven effort to fight cyber bullying

Be Cool Be Nice (BCBN) launched to great fanfare last year, with the help of Willow Smith through her appearance on the cover of Garage magazine. The anti-bullying movement is back, this time with a brand new official interactive book and a

partner app that activates extra adventures. Truly for all ages, the BCBN book features artwork and thoughtful messaging on every page from an impressive list of contributors who’ve joined founder Gerry DeVeaux’s cause. Lenny Kravitz’ NYC based design studio, Kravitz Design, provided creative direction. Famed industrial designer Marc Newson helmed the cover illustration. And that’s just the start.

Whimsy pervades each page and the interactive elements captivate. There’s beauty for sure, but also enough knowledge to encourage all of us to behave better toward one another. Many from the fashion world have lent their visual talents, including individuals from Marc Jacobs, Burberry, DSquared2, and Emilio Pucci. Pat McGrath’s page offers pizzazz. Henry Holland’s page is quite flavorful. There’s a rhythm running through it all, powered by charismatic animated characters. It’s also Snapchat friendly (including the cover, which has a filter trigger), a true reflection of its desire to change habits online. Sometimes, we have to be convinced to reflect on our behavior—or tricked into enjoying a lesson—and that’s what BCBN has done successfully here.

The “Be Cool Be Nice” book is now available in the US for $17. It will roll out to other major markets in November. The accompanying iOS and Android apps can be downloaded for free.
