Best of CH 2015: Instagram
Our snaps around the globe, as well as the art, design and automobiles that moved us
Four and a half years ago we joined Instagram and have posted over 2,500 images since. More than 99% of the photographs we share, we ourselves have taken, and that’s something we’re quite proud of. In essence, Cool Hunting on Instagram has become a visual diary for our team—showcasing our love of art and design, and destinations across the globe and even some products that struck our fancy. It was another milestone year as we sped past 200,000 followers. The selections below highlight the breadth and depth of our interests, but the full picture is only a click away.
Charles Pétillon in Covent Garden
Artist Charles Pétillon’s 100,000 white balloons, pulsating with light, made for a joyful, fascinating installation in London’s Covent Garden. Known as “Heartbeat,” the mesmerizing display turned the 19th Century Market Building into something out of place and time.
Inside the Venice Biennale
9,216 LCD panels composed “The Portrait of Sakip Sabanci” by Turkish artist Kutlug Ataman at this year’s Venice Biennale. Each panel featured the face of one person known by the artist, from collaborators to family members.
adidas Futurecraft
It was another innovative year for adidas, but nothing quite looked like their all-white, bespoke Futurecraft sneakers, which utilizes 3D printing to produce a custom-fit midsole.
Leica’s SL Camera
This year we tried out the Leica SL, a stunning minimalist full-frame shooter with wildly impressive capabilities. For our own photo of the camera, we placed a surprise in the background—an irreverent work in miniature by artist and CH contributor Jonah Samson.
Zaha Hadid Dongdeamun Design Plaza
It was a whiteout inside Zaha Hadid’s Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, South Korea. The futuristic destination of curving lines and stark coloration has become a destination for many over the last few years.
The Broad Museum’s Facade
Opened this year in downtown Los Angeles, The Broad is as impressive outside, as it is within. Not only is it free to stand in awe of the Diller Scofidio + Renfro-designed structure, it’s also free to view the permanent collections inside.
Land Rover
This Land Rover Range Rover “Velar” is one of 20 built for the original launch in 1970. We spied it over at Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung in Frankfurt.
Mercedes Benz MB G500
To test its full capabilities, we took the MB G500 through the trenches at Motorsportclub Bauschheim e.V. im ADAC. The rugged vehicle drove as smooth as it looked.
Le Salin de l’île Saint Martin
There was absolutely no filter necessary when we visited the salt marshes of Gruissan, France—radiating pink at the time we were there. We caught the view from La Cambuse du Saunier, an oyster-serving restaurant at the heart of the saltern.
小不點 BUDDY in Macau
Walking through the streets of Macau, we found 小不點 BUDDY, a candy and trinket store where glass balloons—made by a local artist—hung from the ceiling by the dozens. There was a sense of wonder to the colors and shapes that made us want to buy them all.
CH Edition: Cuba
Arles Del Rio’s “The Need for Other Airs” installation took place at Parque Histórico Militar Morro-Cabana for Zona Franca 12th Bienal de la Habana. The multicolored snorkels defining the piece came to embody much of our Cool Hunting Cuba trip: fun, colorful and artistic.
Art Basel 2015
Closing out our year of art fairs, this work by artist Sean Newport, “A Portal to Anywhere” was seen at the Scope Art Show during Miami Art Week 2015. The wall-hung sculpture of acrylic on poplar wood cut-outs represented a lot of what strikes people’s attention during art fairs: the bright and ostentatious.
