JR’s “Can Art Change the World?”
A retrospective book of the street artist and activist’s work
French street artist and activist JR posed a loaded question on stage in 2011, when he was awarded the $100,000 TED Prize: can art change the world? A book of the same name, published by Phaidon and made in close collaboration with JR, gives one of many possible answers via a retrospective look at his work. Taking the reader through the public streets as well as contemporary museums and galleries, the book covers the artist’s major undertakings—many of which take over building façades—like “Face 2 Face,” “Wrinkle in the City,” “Unframed” and “Inside Out,” but also museum and gallery exhibitions. It’s intriguing to follow, how over time, JR’s interests grew from taking portraits and breaking the medium’s limitations, to handing the camera over to global citizens.
