Dead or Alive: You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)

Flamboyant and eccentric performer Pete Burns passed away today at just 57 years old. The British singer was best known for his work with his band Dead Or Alive (formerly called Nightmares in Wax), whose track “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” was a huge hit in 1984. The song is almost overshadowed by his plush robes, sparkly eyepatch, and overall androgynous look—which garnered Burns plenty of attention. His knack for experimenting with style began early—he dropped out of school after removing his eyebrows and dying his hair bright red. His progressive and oftentimes playful approach to gender and appearance made him a fascinating individual within popular culture, not just ’80s music.
