FLUTTER Pop-Up Museum, LA
More than photogenic, this show encourages artists to play and experiment
Akin to the Museum of Ice Cream, there’s been a surge of installations and quasi-museums infiltrating cities—many of which seem to be built purely for social media. In what might be a happy surprise to some, FLUTTER, a new Los Angeles show, is centered around working artists as it provides a space for them to have fun. Instead of selecting a theme, FLUTTER looks to share art that’s built around play, experimentation and joy.
With pieces from 15 participants, the show features sculpture, virtual reality and more. Katie Stout has created a wonderful trashscape Arc de Triomphe watched over by a smudgy Sphinx. Steps away, there’s a hall full of plushie appendages.
Leah Guadagnoli welcomes viewers to play around with her work, mixing and remixing her shapes thanks to velcro walls. Elise Peterson decorates her room with helium balloons that seem to tile the ceiling and puffed up seating set before a video projection.
FLUTTER features a charity partnership with the Born This Way Foundation and a collaboration with Flavor Paper—the latter particularly shines, as the majority of rooms feature custom wallpapers made in collaboration with the artists. Some are simple and straightforward (Stout’s watercolor women, Guadagnoli’s geometric stacks), while others are mesmerizing and handcrafted, from Saya Woolfalk’s mirrored/polka-dotted illustrations to Liz Collins’s blacklight explosion of circles and spots to Peterson’s collage of all-seeing eyes.
Opening tomorrow, 1 June, FLUTTER is located at 217 S La Brea Ave and will be on view through November.
