Jack Bevan of Foals’ End of Summer Playlist for Cool Hunting
The Oxford band’s drummer captures the mood for Labor Day weekend
Celebrating their new album release—What Went Down—and the Labor Day long weekend in the US, we asked Foals’ drummer Jack Bevan to make an end of summer playlist for Cool Hunting. As he explains, “In an end of summer playlist, I look for music which has a sadness in it. I always get sad about the summer ending, but I like to embrace it—it’s probably the time of year where music means the most to me.”

It’s always been difficult to place the band Foals categorically. Their music exudes force, and compels listeners to dance, though often riding waves of thoughtful lyricism set to sharp guitars and concise drum-work. With their most recent album, it’s easy to chart the progression of math rockers turned emotionally-charged, at times funky and pop-tinged, guitar band. Regarding this latest album, Bevan shares, “Making What Went Down was a real pleasure. We recorded in rural south of France, in a grand old farm. We’re really proud of it. My favorite song on the record keeps changing, which is always a good thing!” The album is one of the band’s best, but when you’re done listening to it, give Bevan’s playlist for Cool Hunting a go—it’s beautiful, reflective, a little melancholy and a great listen for a long weekend.
