Helmut Newton at the Annenberg Space for Photography
The king of kink comes to LA in an exhibition of large format photography
As the photographer credited with defining the genre of black-and-white fashion photography, Helmut Newton is nevertheless rarely found outside the pages of books and magazines. That’s why our ears perked up when the Annenberg Space for Photography announced plans to exhibit over 100 large-scale images from Newton’s first three books “White Women,” “Sleepless Nights” and “Big Nudes.” For LA-based photography enthusiasts, it’s a chance to marvel at life-size prints from “the king of kink.”
Accompanying the photographs are two documentary films on Newton. “Helmut by June” is a personal look at the photographer’s life by his wife of 56 years, June Newton, while “Provocateur” is an original film commissioned by the Annenberg Space for Photography that addresses Newton’s influence on fashion, women and photography. Whether you go for gender reversal, light play or architectural composition, Helmut’s oeuvre has a hundred ways to hook you.
“Helmut Newton: White Women, Sleepless Nights, Big Nudes” was originally organized for the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston in 2011. However now in LA, the show will run at the Annenberg Space for Photography 29 June through 8 September 2013, at which point it will embark on a European tour.
