Photographer Jason M Peterson + Overthrow Boxing

All the grit and grandeur of the Bleecker Street club captured in black and white

As a sport of force, stamina and speed, boxing delivers many impassioned moments that aren’t easily captured in all their glory. Photographer Jason M Peterson—Creative Chairman of North America at Havas and an acclaimed Instagrammer who just crossed one million followers—spent time at NYC’s Overthrow Boxing Club to attempt exactly that. The resulting black and white images, shared here, demonstrate concise emotionalism, structure within structure and characters above and beyond the sport’s archetypes. For every raw instant, Peterson lends a visual finesse that itself packs a subversive punch. Peterson’s photographed everything from President Obama’s farewell speech in Chicago this year to Chance the Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring Festival. Overthrow’s been a destination at 9 Bleecker Street for a few years now—and has a forthcoming Williamsburg, Brooklyn location opening in August. Together, the results are impactful.
