Premiere: “Turnstile” by Lionlimb
100 drawings from guitarist Stewart Bronaugh accompany the duo’s poignant piano-driven tune
Nashville-based guitarist Stewart Bronaugh put his music project Lionlimb on hold to join Angel Olsen’s backing band for her 2014 album Burn Your Fire For No Witness and on tour. Now, after recruiting fellow tourmate and Brooklyn-based drummer Joshua Jaeger, Bronaugh brings Lionlimb back. Gearing up for a one-off release of their own, the duo’s single “Turnstile” speaks of a transactional relationship. The accompanying video, which premieres on CH, features 100 drawings by Bronaugh, some just sketches, others more intricate. “The drawings are a combination of friends, pictures in magazines and books, and just impulsive content,” he says.
“Originally the song had a lot of stuff going on—organ, bongos, sleigh bells, more guitars—but in the end we stripped it back to basically be all about the piano and drums, only keeping the horns and a singular guitar line,” Bronaugh tells CH about the track. “Another fun fact about this song is that the tape ripped in two at the very end, and if you listen closely, you can hear it skip right after the last note as result of taping it back together.”
Turnstile 7″ will be Lionlimb’s first release, out on 18 September 2015 from Brooklyn-based Bayonet Records, which was founded less than a year ago by wedded duo Dustin Payseur (of Beach Fossils) and Katie Garcia (former label manager for
Captured Tracks, now A&R for Secretly Group). Lionlimb is their newest signee, joining a roster that includes Beach Fossils, Warehouse, Frankie Cosmos, Jerry Paper and more.
