Our Unhealthy Obsession With Bottled Water

If predictions prove to be correct, global bottled water intake will surpass the world’s consumption of carbonated beverages by the end of this year. To some, that may seem like a good thing—given the negative health effects of sugary soft drinks—but, to environmentalists, this is a major concern. In countries where fresh water is abundant and the tap is safe to drink, it just doesn’t make sense to sail-in packaged water from halfway around the world. Aside from the environmental cost of producing the plastic bottles themselves, the carbon footprint caused by transportation alone is enough to warrant change.
