Premiere: Hiatus Kaiyote’s “Molasses” Live in Paris

A soulful performance that showcases each band member’s muscianship

In a time when hyper-manufactured hits created in multimillion dollar studios dominate the airwaves, Melbourne-based quartet Hiatus Kaiyote have been stoking a different kind of fire with their DIY approach built on raw energy, creativity and most of all, musicianship. Their diverse influences—from afro-beat to jazz to flamenco and even sound design—result in a soulful, off-the-wall sound that knows no boundaries. Today, CH premieres an enrapturing live performance of “Molasses”—one of the strongest tracks off of their just-released second album, Choose Your Weapon, featuring the band’s signature polyrhythms and songwriting.

“This performance of ‘Molasses’ happened in Paris for a festival where we were very lucky to share the bill with one of our idols, the Ethiopian artist Mulatu Astatqe,” bassist Paul Bender tells CH. Recorded at Grande Halle De La Villette, the video showcases each band member’s talents and their ability to complement each other seamlessly. There’s no single star on stage except Hiatus Kaiyote.

Choose Your Weapon, where all the band members share songwriting credits on every track, is out now via iTunes, Spotify and more; catch the band as they’re currently on tour into the summer.
