The Thanksgiving Reader

Commence dinner a little differently this year with this collection of contemplative readings

We’re approaching that time of the year many people come to dread for its airport travel clogs and the political arguments that await at dinner. Thanksgiving is just T-minus 10 days and this year, entrepreneur and blogger Seth Godin suggests a way to approach annual gatherings a little more consciously—and all it requires is access to a printer. The universal Thanksgiving Reader is a small collection of readings that celebrate love, life and gratitude. It’s a free to download PDF, easy to share and has no underlying commercial motivation; simply print it out and have each person read a section aloud. A traditional Navajo prayer, a pledge from Nelson Mandela, a poem from Lebanese-American artist Kahlil Gibran and more make up the diverse excerpts meant to be spoken and reflected upon.

“We get so hung up on our own agenda, and the drama (our drama, their drama, everyone’s drama), and on what’s next that sometimes it’s worth taking a minute to understand that connection can change everything,” Godin tells CH. “I’ve always loved Thanksgiving (no gifts, no guilt) and my favorite part are the small moments when we realize our ability to to be gracious with one another, to breathe the same air, to make a small dent.” He adds, “This is my best effort to share that magic.”
