One of the most captivating artists at Miami Art Week, Belgian artist Jan Fabre painstakingly creates massive allegorical works entirely out of naturally shedded jewel beetle wings. In the series “Tribute to Hieronymus Bosch in Congo,” he uses the biological emerald detritus to comment on the gruesome history of King Leopold II and the Congo Free State with dazzling and upsetting effect.

Two of Fabre’s works were recently on view at Scope Art Fair in Miami through Salzburg’s Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art gallery, where we learned about the symbol-rich work and intense creative process. Read more about Jan Fabre’s series over at Société Perrier.
