Ten Principles of Good Design Poster

Bibliothéque and Vitsœ present an illustrative guide to Dieter Rams’ brilliant thinking

Endlessly quoted by designers and educators, Dieter Rams’ Ten Principles of Good Design has remained a benchmark for creative thinking since the legendary designer released the proclamation in the early ’80s. In an homage to the list of sound advice, London-based studio Bibliothéque—who also helmed the design for the Rams retrospective “Less Is More”—has designed a poster of the principles that is being produced by Vitsœ, the manufacturer of Rams’ 606 Universal Shelving System. Arranged in sporadic columns, the maxims are accompanied by exemplary designs by Rams and his colleagues, including the ET66 calculator created alongside Dietrich Lubs.

The seven-color print measures 24″ x 36″ and makes an instructive addition to the office. Driven by the desire to have a system that could objectively evaluate good design, Rams’ contribution has helped to shape the standards by which design of all traditions can be judged. By Rams’ own criteria, Vitsœ’s design is—at the very least—useful, unobtrusive and honest.

The poster sells from The Ghostly Store for $40.
