The young woodworker releases an iPhone 5 shelf and more handmade goods
After a relatively quiet start in August 2012 young woodworker Ryden Rizzo—producing under the moniker Allied Maker—quickly found his supremely simple homeware designs garnering much attention around the web. Now with the holiday media rush behind him, Rizzo returns to his workshop to update some of his stately designs with leather accents, and to introduce a new iPhone 5 charging shelf. Making everything by hand in Sea Cliff, NY, Rizzo wholly encompasses the pared-down aesthetic and focus on quality that characterize his work.
“My design approach stems from an obsession with the raw materials,” says Rizzo. “From the sounds it makes, to how it feels in your hand, to how it looks on your table—every detail is important.” An excellent example of his thoughtful nature is the new iPhone 5 shelf, which hides the hinge and rare earth magnets while keeping the shelf securely closed around the phone cord. For tabletop pieces like cutting boards and lamps, Rizzo adds a small swath of leather at the base to make the item “more precious” but at the same time provides better grip and protection for whatever surface the object is placed upon.
All items are now available available online from the Allied Maker website, with prices ranging from $59 for the iPhone 5 shelf to $2,700 for the wood and ceramic speaker.
