Architect Soo K Chan’s Understanding of Design

An exclusive video interview with the mastermind behind extraordinary buildings and structures

Across the more than 40 international projects architect Soo K Chan has touched—from public works to resorts, homes and even furniture—a clear design language has been declared that balances a pristine, organized stature with a sense of awe. Chan, the founding principal and design director of SCDA Architects—launched in Singapore back in 1995—takes a holistic approach to all ventures, touching everything from epic facades to minute interior details. His work garnered him the first-ever Designer of the Year Award from Singapore’s president—one of many accolades collected for his repertoire.

At present, the architect has three residential towers in development in New York. The first, his NYC debut, the Soori High Line continues to gather attention for its balance of 16 pools within a 31-unit property (opening spring 2017). And there’s no person who can better describe such a project or the wisdom of designing and developing simultaneously than Chan himself. In a brief but potent video that visually surveys much of his work, Chan delves into his creative process and shares a bit of his knowledge with the rest of us.
