A limited-run, print publication focused on all things New York Design Week

Many digital publications still dream of a print edition—the nostalgic glamour of the newsprint days, creating something tangible that readers can have as keepsakes. On occasion, an online magazine will be able to justify a move to print, and with NYCxDesign taking place 16-20 May 2014, industrial design magazine Core77 has found the right beat. If funded, C77 Design Daily (presently up on Kickstarter) will manifest as four consecutive installments of a 16 full-color page, tabloid-sized newspaper. Done on archival-quality paper, it would be the product of longer lead stories paired with on-the-ground daily reporting on NYC’s citywide design celebration, assembled each evening and printed every night. Core77 has already thought out a 20 venue distribution network that employs trucks, tricycles and wire newspaper racks to keep design enthusiasts updated and engaged.

As for what’s inside, Core77 (one of the first internet publications, debuting back in 1995) will cover the various design events taking place around the city. Their team will be out and about delivering the best from exhibitions and showcases, as well as the more obscure and emergent debuts. Some content will be prepared in advance; in-depth features, studio visits and profiles on the organizers and curators. But they’ll keep the real-time edge as one of the most exciting weeks in NYC unfurls around them.

According to Core77’s Editorial Director Eric Ludlum, “The best projects, in our experience, come from joking around—as everyone chips in more outlandish ideas to get a laugh something crazy gets built up, and at the moment it all seems possible. The trick is converting the just-crazy-enough-to-work momentum into a stable production effort that doesn’t necessitate Herculean effort and all-nighters.” Regarding why now, at this year’s NYCxDesign, Ludlum asks, “If not us, whom? If not now, when? Sometimes we feel it is our responsibility to bring the spirit of Dada or the absurd to the community. We are a publishing company but our ultimate goal is to generate exceptional experiences people can share with us.” With all this in mind, the C77DD is bound to be insightful, not to mention exciting—and it’s a welcome daily addition to the ever-growing and evolving design week.
