CH Omakase 2017: Aurora Clock
A blacked-out update of the timepiece, handmade in an edition of 10
More than a standard reissue, our blacked-out Aurora Clocks for CH Omakase are the marriage of nostalgia and imagination. This type of magical clock illuminated the childhood homes of both CH founders Josh Rubin and Evan Orensten in its traditional chrome form. Rubin and Orensten bonded over it very early on in their relationship—and the opportunity to make a series themselves more than 15 years later speaks more than we ever could about the merits of the piece. That said, it’s a design delight that all can appreciate.
Each hand of the clock is on its own polarized disc so that when you view the backlit face, the colors gently shift in a manner that’s both soothing and mesmerizing. In our blacked-out version, the color-shifting casts an oily glow on the inside bezel that adds a new dimensionality to the experience, and one we couldn’t quite predict. Originally these clocks had incandescent bulbs that would brown the plastic discs over time. Ours has been updated with LEDs for both brighter display and cooler operation. We made these pieces in collaboration with California’s ChronoArt, where founder Barry Gamble repairs Aurora and Prisma Clocks—and also produces new pieces by hand. Truly years in the making, this blacked-out version made its debut in a very limited edition for our 2017 Omakase collection.
