Light ash, dark felt and polished steel come together in the young designer’s modular furniture collection shown at Feria Habitat Valencia 2012

At this year’s Feria Habitat Valenica, Cristian Reyes Creative Studio presented a comprehensive range of household furnitures unified by light wood, dark felt, soft finishes and, of course, modularity. The uniquely calming combination of materials—along with clever design tweaks—encourages a sense of exploration in the user. The seemingly simple Alma lamp, for example, can actually be broken down into a desk lamp and coat rack.

Made from ash wood, polished steel and wool felt, the Alma lamp offers light as well as texture. To transform the piece, a gray shade can be removed to reveal the simple wooden coat rack beneath. Unattached, the lighting element becomes an independent table lamp. But the separation doesn’t disrupt the studio’s clean, fresh aesthetic; on the contrary, it only makes the collection more cohesive, extending Reyes’ signature look to different parts of the room.

For both the Alma table and a coordinating trunk, everyday considerations were taken into form and function. The table, which features removable legs and an adjustable rack, can be played with to fit a number of everyday activities—from studying to eating, and even lounging—with the addition of a felt top layer and pillow. The similarly styled trunk boasts a large storage compartment and a cot-like sling shelf for extra organization. Given its size, we think the trunk would also make an ideal kitchen island.

If the knockout Alma collection is any indicator, we’d say the young Cristian Reyes has a bright future ahead of it. For more information on the Spanish studio, visit them online.
