Porterlight’s Customizable Cargo Bike
Unusually light, compact and durable, the Bringley design makes it easier for urban residents to say goodbye to cars
Young London-based company Porterlight has re-thought the cargo bike from scratch, and their debut model, the Bringley, is one that will have urban residents swapping out their car keys for bike helmets. Founder Lawrence Brand wanted to design a compact cargo bike that could seamlessly be incorporated into his city lifestyle—one that was light, durable, and could fit into small apartments. After testing his prototype for over 5000 km, biking from Bucharest to Kazakhstan (with camping gear and provisions bundled up on the cargo bike’s deck), Brand was convinced it was tough enough for the London streets.
Weighing 18.8kg with a flat deck, the Bringley is one of the lightest long-wheel base cargo bikes available, and its only 40cm longer than an average bike. The company offers a wide range of colors and materials for the metal body, tires, pedals, brake cables and more. There’s also an array of deck options to suit your needs, whether it’s a plastic crate, 70-liter lockable aluminum trunk or two child seats (and all of these are interchangeable). The Shimano Alfine eight-speed hub gears allow the rider to change gears without pedaling. Each bike is handmade to order in Porterlight’s London workshop, and since even the steel frames are hand TIG welded, almost anything can be customized—all you have to do is ask or propose your current problem. With a cargo bike option like this, there’s less and less of an excuse to drive for whatever errands you need to run.
