David Flores Dunny
Artist David Flores sees the world in contours. Known for his skeletal drawings and paintings that divide figures and places into outlined shapes, the latest notch on this prolific artist's belt are two limited-edition Dunnys, Bad and Evil (pictured L-R above). "When I see things, I see shapes on top of them . . . the shapes they're made of," Flores explained from his studio in Santa Barbara, California. Starting with a sketch on illustrator file templates, Flores applied his brand of stained glass-like outlines to the Dunny shape. Finished 8" pieces are available in silver and gold, a choice Flores credits to Kid Robot founder Paul Budnitz. The two met several years back when Flores, living in San Francisco nearby the first Kid Robot store on Haight Street, approached Budnitz in the store and introduced himself. "You can't just kick back," Flores says of his bold approach. A veteran of skateboard design (he's held down positions at Deluxe, Shorty's, and, Stereo to name a few), onboard with Start Mobile, working on a slew of other collabos, like with XLARGE, Stussy, and recon, continuing his clothing line sold at Stakes Are High in Tokyo, and with his own vinyl toy, "Konartis", due out from Kid Robot in May, it looks like Flores is doing anything but kicking back.
