60 Years of Sergio Rodrigues’ Mole Chair
Espasso celebrates the Brazilian designer’s iconic, comfort-first leather furniture
The Rio de Janeiro-born Sergio Rodrigues, who passed away just a few years ago, wasn’t called the father of Brazilian furniture lightly. His penchant for comfort, and beautiful local woods like jacaranda, resulted in designs like his late ’50s Mole chair: an exquisite piece whose leather invites rest, rather than rigidity (“mole” translates to “soft” in Portuguese). Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the designer’s iconic Mole armchair, Brazilian furniture outpost Espasso is hosting an exhibition “Mole Chair: 60 Years,” with select vintage designs on view. In conjunction, LinBrasil has made 60 limited edition pieces of the Mole armchairs, which are exclusively available in the US through the gallery. Separately, a vintage chair and ottoman will also be donated to The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The exhibition is now open at 38 N Moore St, Espasso’s TriBeCa location, and runs through 16 June 2017. Customized orders of the Mole chair and more of Rodrigues’ designs can be made at Espasso. Be sure to revisit our interview below with designer himself, back in 2009.
