The House of Harry Winston’s San Francisco Salon
An iconic Union Square space reimagined with splendor
200 Post Street, a corner building in San Francisco’s Union Square neighborhood, has long been a destination for the sale of fine jewelry. An architectural landmark, it housed retailers Shreve & Co until 2015. After 109 years at the site, the SF-based brand shifted to a nearby location and another icon began the process of making it their own. Recently, Harry Winston opened the doors to this replenished 5,806-square-foot salon—and its vibe is very much that of a luxuriant, private residence. Here, returning guests will notice two crucial elements of preservation: the magnificent marble columns and pilasters remain untouched as well as the flooring beside the elevator banks on all levels.
This opening joins other Winston salons just launched in Istanbul, Hong Kong and Zurich, all of which are designed internally. Here, grays and taupes lend a calm, welcoming palette. The brand peppered the space with bespoke chandeliers and custom-designed black lacquered furniture. Antique pieces, including bronze accent furniture, create visual highlights. And finally, hand-beaded silk wall tapestries offer a rarefied splendor. Altogether, it adheres to the image one associates with a house known for diamonds and high-end timepieces. But there’s something quite special about the fact that it all happens within the walls of a building arguably destined to hold jewelry.
