Ruutu Vases by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Iittala
The two French designers create a series of geometric vases for the iconic Finnish glassware brand
Celebrated designers (and brothers) Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have been working side by side since 1999 (when they launched their own eponymous design firm), collaborating with many of the top design manufacturers on projects ranging from small utilitarian objects to architectural endeavors. Their latest joint project with Finnish glassware brand Iittala is just the latest to catch our eye. Taking its name from the Finnish word for diamond or square, the Ruutu vase collection is comprised of five diamond-shaped glass vessels in seven unique colors.
Though the shape may seem simple at a glance, it actually required extra attention from Iittala’s expert craftsman; glass as a material prefers roundness, and naturally resists rigid geometric forms like that of the Ruutu vessels. Because of this, each handblown vase takes seven craftsmen 24 hours to produce. Colors are mixed in during the production process—rather than painted afterward—giving an ethereal, iridescent glow that is nothing short of beautiful. When arranged in different ways, light naturally pierces the intermingling forms creating unique colors and varied hues.
Though launched this past fall in Europe, the Ruttu vases will be available worldwide from MoMA design store beginning 26 January 2015. Prices range from $95 to $295 depending on size.
