Information is Beautiful Awards 2013
A global competition recognizing the best in infographics and data visualization
We’ve been slammed with facts, statistics and reports for as long as we’ve known how to ingest and interpret them. There’s a reason why infographics have surged in popularity and been mobilized by the news media; no trick can plant a fact more firmly in your head than engaging art. In the information chaos of the internet age, data visualization does more than make factoids stick. They make information beautiful. And author and leading data artist David McCandless wants to remind everyone of exactly that. Entry for his second annual Information is Beautiful Awards commences on 12 June 2013 as the only open, global competition dedicated to this creative field of study. Information is Beautiful celebrates excellence in information art, infographics and data visualization. A colorful, well-designed infographic can dress up facts and figures to viral extremes, and McCandless and the awards sponsor, insight and consulting group Kantar, seek to honor this distinct crop of creators.
Last year’s 26 winners brought a wow factor to words and numbers across the six categories of data journalism, data visualization, infographic/information design, interactive visualization, motion infographic and website/tools. Thanks to Kantar they were able to award contestants with $30,000 in cash prizes, and winners also took home the satisfaction of having guest judge Brian Eno critique their work.
The competition will be accepting submissions until 30 August 2013. After a tiered voting process, incorporating votes from the online data visualization community, the winners will be announced in late November at a ceremony in London. Winning pieces will also be featured on McCandless website
