Maison & Objet 2018: Products for City Commuters
Backpacks, helmets, lights and more for those on the move
With some 54% of the world’s population living in cities (a percentage that continues to increase), it’s no surprise that we found a lot of products for commuters—specifically cyclists—at this year’s Maison & Objet. From headphone cleaning kits to foldable helmets, lights, bags, and more, each of our favorite pieces below combine design with functionality and practicality. Of course, style isn’t sacrificed.
Melbourne, Australia’s Memobottle makes unusually slim and easy-to-carry bottles. With the names and shapes inspired by international standards for paper size (A5, A6, A7, etc) the vessels are designed specifically for backpacks—and commuters. Environmentally friendly, they’re made from BPA-free PET and are reusable. Recently the brand launched a new Slim Memobottle style, along with leather accessories including pouches and lanyards.
Traditionally carried by Japanese school children (beginning in the Edo Era, 1603 to 1868), the randoseru is the inspiration behind Randsellier. This new version has been updated for the current day, and was designed with adults in mind. Crafted from sturdy artificial leather, the backpack maintains the original form—retaining the ability use it horizontally—but now has internal compartments for tablets, laptops and more.
Another backpack, Mice Weekend‘s bags are crafted from a weather-proof fabric that’s made from recycled paper and are constructed so they can be dismantled, flattened and folded. Perhaps surprisingly, the bags are waterproof and durable, and can also be customized with a regular marker. Eco-friendly (thanks to its 100% recycled material) and super-functional, Mice Weekend’s products are available in several colors and shapes.
CH favorite Bookman‘s new
Eclipse is an addition to their collection of products aimed at keeping cyclists (and city runners) safe and visible. This clip-mounted light can be quickly charged with a micro-USB connector and lights up in two colors (red and white) and offers six modes—from fixed to flashing. Small and lightweight, the Eclipse is very bright and is available in three colorways.
Martone Cycling Co‘s bikes and accessories are nothing if not practical. The brand’s new MC2 folding helmet is lightweight and—unlike most helmets—easy to transport. Just a few movements, and its size can be reduced so that it’s small enough to fit into a bag. Despite being extremely foldable, it’s sturdy and robust. Also equipped with a removable fabric visor and a handy waterproof top, this helmet looks a little futuristic and is entirely functional.
