MIDO's Guggenheim-Inspired Wristwatch

A limited edition automatic timepiece invoking one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most iconic buildings

For as long as there have been wristwatches, makers have looked just about everywhere for inspiration—from the skies above to the buildings around. MIDO's latest limited edition automatic timepiece joins the array of watches it in its Inspired by Architecture range—and the source material happens to be the stunning, iconic Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in NYC. Many are familiar with famed American architect Frank Lloyd Wright's swirling masterpiece, and MIDO has brought two fundamental elements from its facade to life on one's wrist. The Inspired by Architecture Guggenheim's round case in satin-finished and polished stainless steel invokes the building's curves, while the eggshell, grained dial makes clear reference to the museum's dome.

There are more nuances tying both the watch and building together but they act like little discoveries when one plays with the piece in their hand. The delightfully-sized 40mm watch features a superb Caliber 80 Si automatic movement, making it a reliable time-telling device, as well. MIDO looks to architecture with regularity—it's a staple of the brand—but this time the building was chosen through an interactive online campaign one year ago. The resulting piece conveys such wonder, respectfully honors its source material and ultimately feels great on the wrist.

The Inspired by Architecture Limited Edition Guggenheim piece is available at select MIDO retailers and online for $1590. Only 500 pieces will be produced.
