A First Peek Inside The New York EDITION Hotel
Modern, organized design counters the building’s historical influences
After spending much of our 2014 Miami Art Week at the cultural and events epicenter that is the Miami Beach EDITION Hotel, we have been eagerly anticipating this spring’s launch of Ian Schrager’s latest, The New York EDITION Hotel. First, because of its location at the southeastern corner of Madison Square Park—offering ease of access to uptown and downtown. But more importantly, because it occupies the iconic Clocktower building (often known as the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower). While much of the developments are under wraps, a recent look inside one of the guest rooms revealed design inspiration drawn from the building’s early days—and a 180-degree view of Manhattan.
The building dates back to 1909, and was the world’s tallest until 1913. That, coupled with an admiration of early 20th century private clubs and classically elegant private residences, lends itself to both the vintage lobby and the interior design of the 273 guest rooms. As for the room, custom-built walnut nightstands accent the dark walnut headboard. But it’s the extra-long, floating white oak desk that truly stands out. Calling to mind the work of interior designer Jean-Michel Frank in the ’20s, the piece anchors the space in a functional, beautiful manner. The space is luxuriant, and its influences are felt, but with its simple, clean order there’s more than a modern nod. While the restaurant, two bars and penthouse have yet to be unveiled, we expect much of this same organized, modernized majesty.
