Normann Copenhagen’s Kabino and Sko
A minimal update on a classic credenza and shoe rack from the Danish home furnishing brand
Always a go-to for smart, accessible Danish design, Normann Copenhagen holds a spot on our must-see list each spring during Salone del Mobile, and their showing last week in Milan only further inflated our confidence in the clever brand. Of the collection of new home furnishings, the matching Kabino credenza and Sko shoe rack really caught our attention. Designed by the young Simon Legald, a 2012 graduate of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, the two ash and steel pieces play well within the approachable aesthetic first laid by the Block table and Toj clothes rack—two of Legald’s earlier designs for Normann Copenhagen.
Legald’s approach tends to highlight—rather than hide—structural components, allowing each material’s prominent features to contribute to the overall aesthetic. In this way the Sko shoe rack is kept as minimal as possible, without losing any character. The Kabino itself sticks to a more conventional credenza look, although a connection between structural form and function is tied as the cabinet door handle cutouts mimic the thick dowel legs in shape and size. Another nod to function is the use of perforation on the Kabino sliding door, which allows for the use of electronics via remote control even when the doors are closed.
Conscious that many design enthusiasts don’t live in the lofts we all wish we did, Legald designed the Kabino to land just under four feet in length and the Sko two and a half, making them more appropriate for modestly sized city living.
