Bridging the gap between the industrial and the handcrafted is one of the major elements of Scandinavian design. Coupled with an insistence on functional minimalism and textured natural materials, the special edition collaboration Lamino chair from Sweden’s Nudie Jeans and furniture-maker Swedese is the embodiment of these principles. Debuting at this year’s Stockholm Furniture Fair—running 3-7 February 2015—the collaboration sees Nudie Jeans creative director Maria Erixon reinterpreting the iconic mid-century design in a host of materials that were chosen particularly for their aging properties, including 100% organic Kaihara selvedge denim.

“We share the same passion for natural and raw materials, craftsmanship and high-quality construction and production,” Erixon says. “Products that are supposed to be used, that age beautifully and develop patina over time. The predilection for functional and sustainable design is maybe characterized by our common roots in Småland, Sweden.” In addition to the raw denim model, Nudie and Swedese created a version in a pre-washed, hand-treated selvedge denim and a natural leather iteration with vegetable-tanned hides sourced from family-run tannery Tärnsjö Garveri.

First introduced in 1956, the Lamino chair is still made by skilled craftsman at the company’s factory in Vaggeryd, about two hours east of the Nudie Jeans HQ in Gothenburg. Individually handmade, each frame is composed of a glue-laminated, untreated beech veneer interspersed with layers of orange veneer as a reference to the stitching found in Nudie Jeans. Designed with longterm use in mind, this special edition Lamino is sure to remain a home fixture for generations. Along with the sustainably sourced materials and lasting build, Nudie and Swedese will donate €50 to Amnesty International for each Lamino sold.

Keep an eye out for the Nudie Jeans + Swedese Lamino at this year’s Stockholm Furniture Fair as Swedese celebrates their 70th anniversary. The Lamino will hit select suppliers in Spring 2015. Check out the slideshow for a look at the careful production process behind each Lamino.
