In a superb new Vox video, visionary Shigeru Miyamoto addresses what has made his games—Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, Zelda and more—so powerful. Filled with insight and wit, the video explains Miyamoto’s emphasis on storytelling before programming and consumer’s want to feel a sense of completion. Miyamoto himself addresses his background in industrial design and how a game must teach a player how to play. The designer not only saved Nintendo from near collapse, he spearheaded now iconic games and his words of wisdom are invaluable. Super Mario Run, released in December 2016 for iPhone, was Miyamoto’s most recent work and the company’s first mobile game.
