The Fabric of India

London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (aka V&A) boasts an incredible collection of handmade Indian fabrics and textiles—a collection they say is the greatest in the world. Though their exhibition “The Fabric of India” is coming to a close this weekend, the accompanying hardcover book is surprisingly comprehensive—offering extensive research and accessible knowledge, as much as it inspires through vivid imagery. Featuring historic pieces (some dating as far back as the 3rd century) that made their way around the world, “The Fabric of India” covers patterns and techniques, manufacturing, fibers, diverse uses, myths and cultural significance.
Floral, geometric, subtle, bright and everything in-between, the fabrics vary entirely and while some might seem traditionally Indian, many will surprise. The only common theme is that each fabric is lush and meticulously crafted. Pick up a copy of The Fabric of India from Amazon for $50.
