Todd Snyder + Timex Watches
The menswear designer lends his skills to inexpensive, classic timepieces
While visiting Japan, NY-based menswear designer Todd Snyder—who happens to be a vintage watch fan—spied a Japan-only release of a Timex watch collaboration utilizing Red Wing’s signature leather. Smitten with the piece, he gathered enough of them for his models to wear at his closing night New York Fashion Week: Men’s showcase. The watch—a 42mm Timex Waterbury with Red Wing Shoe Leather—is now available exclusively outside of Japan at Todd Snyder stores and online, and the piece excels twofold. There are clear, successful references to classic yet rugged chronographs, but there’s also the refreshing use of premium leather and stainless steel. Also, it’s reasonably priced.
This, however, is only half of Snyder’s involvement with Timex (with whom he once designed a J. Crew collection). Snyder has been visiting the brand’s design laboratory in Milan and lending his signature touches to another throwback piece: initially called the Timex + Todd Snyder Bullseye watch and now known as The Mod. This piece also carries classic references, though based upon ’70s military designs. For Snyder, Timex appealed as a collaborator because of their roots in heritage, Americana and military timepiece development. His eponymous clothing line draws influence from the same sources. There’s a balance between necessity and style. Timex has been around since 1854; Todd Snyder was founded in 2011. Together, they’re bringing back the past in devices crafted for the future.
