Tudor’s New Heritage Black Bay “Black”
Their award winning diver line expands with an elegant addition
In 2012, TUDOR unveiled their Heritage Black Bay diver watch line—an inspired two model collection invoking 1950s style. In essence, it was a revival of a much-loved classic, punctuated with modern nuances, by the relaunched Rolex sibling brand. And yet, there was something more here. The watch would win awards and a new generation of fans. As an extension of this, now, there’s a third model within the line: the new Heritage Black Bay “Black”. While adding a new color (or material, for that matter) to a watch range might not seem newsworthy (to anyone other than collectors), not only is the new “Black” the most refined iteration, it’s a testament to the brand’s continued strength and consumer interest. Here, TUDOR once again succeeds in delivering something both luxurious and functional.
We had an opportunity to get hands on with the “Black” in its brushed steel bracelet form. It continues to sport the line’s emblematic “snowflake” hands—a nice touch that makes it immediately recognizable to those in the watch world. A distinct design detail, however, is visible atop the unidirectional bezel: a red triangle that was a signature of TUDOR divers’ models from the late 1950s. The 41mm case (same as with the other two iterations) marks a reasonable size, feeling substantial but not overbearing. And of course, the watch carries a TUDOR calibre 2824 self-winding mechanical movement and a 38 hour power reserve. Naturally, the watch also happens to be waterproof up to 200 meters. The notion of heritage infuses this piece—and yet, at its price point, the Heritage Black Bay “Black” happens to be one of the most reliable, well-made watches on the market today.
