Danish Design Brand Vipp’s 80th Anniversary Products
Celebrating the legacy with their first-ever chair, French artist Vahram Muratyan’s commemorative bin and new furniture
What began as a provincial metalworker’s vision for a functional, respectable trash can has expanded into a most important global design brand. Vipp founder Holger Nielse personally crafted his now-iconic pedal bin in 1939. It has since found a place in homes around the world, as well as in MoMA‘s permanent collection. From Nielsen’s first concept to the development of other kitchenware in 2012, a beloved prefab house called Shelter in 2015, and now hotel concepts, the last 80 years have seen tremendous growth for Vipp, though the brand remains loyal to its Danish roots and sleek aesthetic.
In its 80th year, Vipp has released its first-ever chair and lovers of the brand have not been disappointed. Slender and well-considered, the Vipp451 cites powder-coated aluminum and several premium fabrics—such as aniline leather and wool—as materials. A small backrest complements the aquiline, architectural frame and comfy seat cushion. Undeniably, it falls in line with the aesthetic choices of the brand’s other offerings.
Vipp’s first chief designer, Morten Bo Jensen, steers the meticulously planned expansions. During his tenure, Jensen has guided the brand into lighting, glassware and furniture—including two sofas and a brand new chevron-patterned dark oak dining room table. He’s also overseen collaborations, with Danish ceramicist Annemette Kissow, designers Poul Kjærholm and Flemming Lassen, and others. As Vipp cautiously proceeds into other sectors, all hands within aim to respect their heritage—coupling clean industrial design with a new level of warmth.
Still, the bin remains at the heart of the business. To commemorate the milestone, Vipp tapped Paris-based graphic artist Vahram Muratyan—the mastermind behind Paris Versus New York: A Tally of Two Cities—for the Danish Bin’s Limited 80th Anniversary Edition. His love of cities translates to a whimsical illustration of Copenhagen’s Nyhavn port. It’s a new level of artistry from a brand that made clear a trash bin doesn’t need to be trash itself.
The 80 Years Limited Edition Bin retails for $439—online and at select stores. The Vipp451 chair comes in three colorways: black and cognac leather, dark grey and grey wool, and dark grey and grey polyester. All retail for $595. As their reputation goes, these products—and all the others in the roster—will endure for years to come.
