Anthology Coffee, Detroit

The small-batch roaster’s single-origin offerings are a new favorite

While in Detroit for this week’s North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), we took a break from previewing Ford GT supercars and Buick’s Avista concept coupe to get our dose of caffeine: a few bags of single-origin, freshly roasted Anthology Coffee. Founded by Josh Longsdorf, the Detroit-based micro-roaster keeps things small, keeping a tight hold on quality. He sources from small farms, like washed coffee from Nyeri, Kenya; pulped natural Catuai coffee from Alfenas, Brazil and wet-processed, sun-dried Caturra beans from Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

Brewing the latter two here at CH HQ in NYC, we breathed in exotic notes of tangerine and citrus in the Guatemalan “La Esperanza.” It packs quite an aroma, and that’s what Anthology tries to do with its roasting: highlight the fruity or floral characteristics of the beans as experienced in their green, unroasted state. The Brazilian “Passeio” smells more familiar: earthy, nutty and nicely textured. It made for a smooth cup of coffee this morning.

Those in Detroit can stop by Anthology Coffee’s café and roasting space located at co-working and studio space Ponyride for beans and a carefully made cup. Their coffee can also be enjoyed at choice cafés all over the city (and Michigan)—like Astro Coffee, Café 78 at MOCAD, Trinosophes and Detroit Institute of Bagels. The rest of us can order through their online shop, featuring a selection of current offerings.
