Benefiting The ACLU, The Standard’s “Chefs Stand Up” Dinner Series
A look at the three-city venture that supports immigrant communities
The Standard is hosting a three-city, nearly three-month long dinner series benefitting the ACLU, called “Chefs Stand Up.” With chefs from various cities, ethnic backgrounds and experience levels, the series will feature dishes inspired by the various immigrant communities that support, improve and evolve the industry. Proceeds from each dinner will go to the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project—a part of the Union that combats discrimination against immigrants.
Starting at The Standard in Miami, the series kicked off last month with NYC-based chef Devonn Francis of Yardy. Miami will play host to two more chefs and dinners then NYC’s East Village and Downtown Los Angeles three installments each; the series concludes on 4 December. Angela Dimayuga, The Standard’s Creative Director of Food and Culture, hopes to bring together chefs to create a one-time experience for those interested and willing to donate their time and a portion of their ticket price to the efforts of the ACLU—and the fight for civil rights and liberties for immigrants.
“I am so excited,” Dimayuga says. “It’s is a true amalgamation of food, activism and art.” Attendees will not only indulge in the delicious meals, but also informative talks and transformative art.
“The series was made for chefs to actively participate and connect with the ACLU. We chose to focus our efforts towards their Immigration Rights’ Project because the hospitality, restaurant, and hotel industry’s staff is largely comprised of immigrant labor. This series celebrates the immigrants we are constantly working with as accomplices who make the work possible. Their culture in an endless inspiration to American cuisine,” Dimayuga says.
The “Chefs Stand Up” series continues this month with dinners in New York and Miami on 18 October and Los Angeles on 24 October. Tickets can be purchased online.
