Brookfield Place’s 5 Borough Challenge: Best Brews of NYC
14 breweries from across the Big Apple compete for accolades
One of NYC’s most dynamic public spaces, Brookfield Place New York’s Winter Garden, will embrace two dozen local breweries for the first-ever craft beer competition on site. All five boroughs are represented, including global heavy-hitters like Brooklyn Brewery and smaller (but equally-compelling) producers like Staten Island’s Killsboro Brewing Company. Known as the 5 Borough Challenge: Best Brews of NYC, the event is free to attend and will stretch across four Thursdays. The final evening will culminate with a competition between one brewery from each borough. A people’s choice award will be issued, based on guest participation, as will a juror’s choice award. Anne Becerra, the first woman in NYC to become a Certified Cicerone, anchors the judging panel. To sweeten the experience, all proceeds from beer sales go to charity partner New Yorkers for Parks.
“We are constantly looking for new ways to activate and enliven the grand public spaces of Brookfield Place in ways New Yorkers and visitors to the city will enjoy,” Andrew Brent, Vice President and Head of Communications at Brookfield Property Partners explains to CH. “New York is undergoing a major craft beer renaissance, and we thought what better venue to showcase that than the famed Winter Garden.” NYC craft beer lovers can relish the diversity from their home city alone. Three breweries from Manhattan go against three each from Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. The Bronx makes a showing with two.
As the space transforms from the Winter Garden to the Winter Biergarten, food pairings will also be available for purchase from Le District and Parm. Anyone tempted to learn more about craft beer from hometown producers—or responsibly indulge in their passion for it—will find no better place to start.
