The Best Monday Morning Breakfast Cocktail

With or without alcohol, the Jack Rose delivers

With Fourth of July on the horizon, and the previous weekend already slipping from short- to long-term memory, we found a cocktail that makes easing into the Monday ahead of a holiday weekend a little bit easier. We don’t necessarily recommend using the alcoholic iteration before heading to work, but if you’re sitting this week out or saving the recipe for next week’s long weekend, adding the tipple is an option. We can safely say the drink holds up without the spirit—and keeps spirits high.

Our selection, the Jack Rose, was rather popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Ernest Hemingway even mentions it, in his 1926 novel “The Sun Also Rises.” While there are a lot of variations on this classic cocktail, with applejack being the general preference, we went down the route of Calvados—an apple brandy from Normandy, France. For a non-alcoholic version, you can switch out the alcohol for a good sparkling apple cider. The lemon juice lends a freshness and the grenadine delivers some syrupy sweetness. Altogether, it’s refreshing, fruity and very easy to construct.

Jack Rose

1.25 oz. of Calvados (we recommend Père Magloire V.S.O.P.)

0.75 oz fresh lemon juice

2 oz Grenadine

Shake all the ingredients with ice. Strain and serve in a Martini glass or over rocks, depending on personal preference. Garnish with an apple slice or lemon twist.
