Highlights From Maison et Objet

Fresh off a format change, Maison et Objet welcomed 600+ new brands spanning two categories (home interiors and objects, and accessories) and more than 2,900 brands in total. Obviously, seeing everything can be tough—if not impossible. Tokyo Metro Offers Free Snacks to Ease Congestion

In an attempt to alleviate congestion on trains during rush hour, the Tokyo Metro is offering free soba and tempura for riders who opt to travel during off-peak times. The offer will coincide with another program—which is being adopted by 1,000+ local companies—that asks business owners to ease their policies on punctuality so that their employees can arrive later or work from home to lessen the load on the city’s metro system. With the 2020 Summer Olympics coming to Tokyo, these are just two of the ways city officials are hoping to accommodate the influx of people. Read more about them at Quartz.

Tom Dixon Releases In-House Developed Marbled Material

Resembling three-dimensional marbled paper, but with the weight of stone, Swirl is a new material developed by Tom Dixon Studio. It made its debut at Parisian design fair Maison & Objet, in the form of bookends, candleholders and more. Dixon says that the mysterious material comes from the marble industry’s recycled, powdered residue which is then poured and cut. Read more at Dezeen.
