New tunes from Broken Social Scene and the Drums, a debut single by Ms White and more in our week in music
Lo Moon: This Is It
It’s almost hard to believe that “This Is It” marks only the second release ever from LA-based indie rock act Lo Moon (not counting a riveting Hudson Mohawke remix from this April). Since their debut single in September 2016, the band has amassed millions of listens, views and plays all while embarking on multiple US and European tours. This latest epic offering charts the three acts of a relationship, set to a binaural dreamscape that rises to a bewitching chorus. It definitely succeeds at keeping anticipation up for a debut album.
SZA: Broken Clocks
Despite delays on her highly anticipated album, SZA has been offering taste after taste of what we can expect. Her third single, “Broken Clocks,” just dropped and it’s a smooth, soulful and charged track from the TDE artist. SZA’s CTLR will finally release 9 June.
The Drums: Head of the Horse
A third tease from The Drums’ forthcoming album Abysmal Thoughts (out 16 June), “Head of the Horse” might just be one of the band’s most delicate, sincere and direct. Lead singer Jonny Pierce addresses the conflict he felt as a gay child in the suburbs with two Pentecostal preacher parents. It’s a catchy track with truthful substance that puts the group’s airy, surf rock vibes to good use.
Broken Social Scene: Skyline
It’s been seven years since Canadian supergroup Broken Social Scene released an album and yet this year we’re already on our third tease at their forthcoming Hug of Thunder (out 7 July). “Skyline” represents the best of the multi-member act—enveloping sound, captivating vocals and harmonies and thoughtful lyricism. The track demonstrates the sonic prowess of the skilled hands that assembled it, beautifully. Broken Social Scene takes the stage at Toronto’s Field Trip fest this weekend.
Ms White: Full Grown
With jazz-pop wonder and compelling, driven lyricism, “Full Grown” makes for a stellar debut single from NYC’s Ms White. There’s a catchy depth of soul to the song, and further importance springs from Ms White’s work toward trans visibility. The track is the first off of her forthcoming EP Jade, out in September, which uses music to document her transition.
