3×1 + Cone Mills “Special Edition” Capsule Collection

Two brands that live and breathe denim have joined forces for a covetable range

North Carolina’s Cone Mills (founded in 1891) was the largest denim-maker in the world over a century ago. And while the business of weaving denim has changed extensively over the years, Cone has managed to evolve with the times, but also maintain their legacy. It makes sense then that denim experts 3×1 have teamed up with the historic mill in order to create the Special Edition capsule collection, made to celebrate Cone’s 125th anniversary.

Made from limited edition selvedge denim that’s dyed with natural indigo, the collection consists of just four pieces—two pairs of jeans (in 3×1’s signature M3 slim/straight fit as well as the low-rise slim fit of the M5), a tote bag and the line’s standout pleated jacket. Crafted exclusively by 3×1, the jacket’s style nods to old-school workwear, but the gunmetal buttons and tonal stitching add a more modern finish. There are two important notes on this collection. First, the denim is dyed with natural indigo which is very rare these days given the cost and complexity to do so. Second, this denim is unsanforized and raw, meaning that the cotton has never been treated with heat or water and therefor will shrink a lot. For aficionados, these are both incredible attributes given their authenticity, but for the unindoctrinated it means choosing your size requires extra consideration.

The Special Edition collection is available online or at 3×1’s brick-and-mortar store at 15 Mercer St, NYC. Prices start at $275.
