Barely There Summer Care Essentials

Bear the heat and sting of the upcoming months with these personal products

As we head into the season of rigorous application (and re-application) of sunscreen, we have handpicked some lightweight products to supplement your routine and help you feel your best—even on summer’s most brutally hot and sweaty days.

Sachajuan Hair in the Sun

Your hair needs sunblock, too. This summer, the Swedish team behind the minimalist haircare line Sachajuan have come out with some preventative measures. Hair in the Sun ($32) is a light serum that shields hair (and color) with a UV filter that stays put, even after a dip in the water. It also doubles as a styling cream with a sophisticated, light scent.

shu uemura Cleansing Oil

Nothing feels better than splashing cold water on the face after a particularly grimy sweat-fest—and shu uemura’s oil-based cleansers (starting at $31 for 150mL) have become a much-loved alternative to harsh facial cleansers that often leave skin feeling tight and dry. A quick, gentle massage effectively removes all makeup, SPF and impurities collected throughout the day, without stripping any of the skin’s natural moisture. Adding a bit of sunshine to your bathroom sink is their recent collaboration with the whimsical, pop culture-loving designer Yazbukey.

Cocovít Coconut Oil

USDA and Fair Trade USA certified, Cocovít’s coconut oil ($38) is freshly harvested from organic coconuts in South India—then unusually, extracted with a proprietary technique that uses no heat during the extraction process, keeping it 100% raw and preserving all nutrients and enzymes. It results in a versatile, lightweight oil that’s absorbed quickly by the skin, with no waiting around for it to dry. Cocovít founder Rikita Kapadia recommends using it on hair damaged from salt and chlorine as well as a shaving oil and on sunburn or bug bites. It also reduces the appearance of scars and more.

One Love Organics Antioxidant Body Serum

If you’re looking for an even lighter way to hydrate, One Love Organic’s Antioxidant Body Serum ($39) comes in a slim spray bottle form, and the nozzle is lockable for easy transporting. Spritzing this blend of pumpkin seed oil, sea buckthorn oil and antioxidant-rich sea botanicals not only nourishes the skin but also protects it from environmental stressors, and fights free radical damage. Made in St Simons Island, Georgia, One Love’s products recently became ECOCERT organic certified—assuring the highest quality of ingredients.

Red Flower Lip Balm

Prevent lips from drying out after a dip in the ocean with NYC-based Red Flower’s newest offering. The Wanderlust Nourishing Lip Balm ($5) is a blend of beeswax, sweet almond oil, vitamin E and more. Its calming, subdued scent comes from hinoki cedarwood oil, and it’s a useful traveling companion that can also moisturize cuticles, tame fly-aways or even be rubbed onto the wrists and neck for aromatherapy.

Dr Jart Ceramidin Day Tint

Retire the thick foundation and powders into your drawer, and keep it light with the tinted moisturizer from Dr Jart’s cult Ceramidin hydration line. The Ceramidin Day Tint ($48) multi-tasks as a deep hydrating face lotion that offers sheer coverage—enough for pesky blemishes—and UV protection with SPF 15. It’s perfect for when you’re just headed to the office, but we recommend putting an additional layer of sunscreen on for beach bumming afternoons.

Dasein Summer Fragrance

One unisex scent, for each season: Dasein’s Summer ($95) has notes of cilantro, grapefruit, jasmine, orange blossom and grass. Distinct and uplifting, the fragrance (made in small batches in LA) cuts through the heat and sweat of particularly soggy days.
