Battenwear SS13

Corduroy, velour and duck cotton in the Brooklyn-based sportswear brand’s third surf-inspired collection

Founded in 2011 by Brooklyn-based designer Shinya Hasegawa, Battenwear—formerly known as Batten Sportswear—takes a playful approach to active menswear design, favoring unconventional fabrics and colorways with a vintage surf-inspired aesthetic. Delivering all of the above and more is the recently launched SS 2013 collection, anchored by soft pastels and peppered with corduroy, cotton and velour. Although it’s just the young brand’s third season in production, the only ingenuous undertones found on these American-made wares are fully intentional.

The collection spans windbreakers and anoraks to short shorts and floral print button downs with a definitive vintage influence. Of the group, we really dig the cotton Overhang Shorts, which Battenwear brazenly describes as “so comfortable, so stylish and versatile, that you never have to change your clothes.” Also catching our eye—perhaps more out of curiosity than anything else—is the velour Boardwalk Polo. If nothing else, the lounge-ready shirt is a genuine conversation starter.
