Keap’s Simple, Scented Candles
Melting coconut wax into affordable jars of joy in Brooklyn
We love a thoughtfully made candle here at CH, and newly launched Keap raises the bar even higher with their status as a public benefit corporation. A sustainable coconut wax blend (in lieu of paraffin, soy or beeswax) is hand-poured in their Brooklyn studio into made-in-USA recycled glass containers. Four proprietary scents were made with an NYC-based perfumer, and they range from the take-me-straight-to-the-Catskills Wood Cabin (cedar wood, wet moss, burnt pine needles, nutmeg) to the more summery Waves (sea salt, star anise, galbanum, seaweed). And thanks to a no-residue label that comes off cleanly, the glass is easily reusable as vases, jars and more.
While horribly expensive luxury candles end up collecting dust and treated too preciously, Keap’s come with a friendly $28 price tag—meaning this is a scented candle that you’ll feel comfortable actually burning, which is the whole point.
Getting a leg up via Kickstarter, Keap is now offering its debut collection online. For every candle sold, Keap donates $1 to SolarAid, which provides solar lamps to those in need—while stimulating the local economy by supporting entrepreneurship. Expect more scents down the road, and an upcoming candle-related collaboration with NYC concept store Objectify 139 to be announced in July.
