Cordial Organics’ CBD-Powered Wellness Line

Imparting the therapeutic properties of cannabidiol in balms and bitters

Cannabidiol is one of the cannabis plant’s byproducts. You might be more familiar with the plant’s other byproducts like hemp oil (made from the seeds of the hemp plant, and often used in lotions and soaps) and the psychoactive cannabinoid THC, but cannabidiol is distinct from both. Cannabidiol (commonly shortened to CBD) won’t get you stoned, is legal in 43 states, and we’re only just beginning to learn more about its therapeutic potential—from relieving joint pain to helping with anxiety and stress. Research is ongoing regarding uses and side effects (for example, if it can reduce drug-resistant seizures in children with epilepsy), but for those who can’t wait, there are plenty of new wellness lines cropping up based on the superpower ingredient. One such brand is San Diego-based Cordial Organics, whose products are making it easier than ever to incorporate CBD into your already established routines.

Co-founder Shelley Phegley (Cordial Organics is run by two women) recommends taking their Balance tincture under the tongue, but also adds that it can be dropped into tea or water; similarly, their Celebrate bitters enhance cocktails and beverages. For those who feel uncertain about the thought of ingesting CBD, their line of skincare products—facial oils, lip balms, body balms, even bath salts—tap into the anti-inflammatory and calming nature of the cannabinoid. We’re biggest fans of the hydrosols, however. Available in either organic lavender or organic rose, these multi-use sprays hit the spot right before bed—mist your face a few times and get ready for a good night’s sleep.

One thing to note is that CBD can be extracted from either hemp or cannabis plants. Because of current federal and state laws, when it’s derived from hemp plants, it’s easier to distribute and purchase. There’s been discussion in the industry whether hemp-derived CBD is less potent and effective than marijuana-derived CBD, but Phegley argues, “It is not true that CBD from hemp is less potent. There is absolutely no difference between the CBD molecule that comes hemp and the CBD molecule that comes from a marijuana plant.” She adds, “Consumers should be aware of extraction methods because there are some dirty extraction methods. We use CBD extracted by CO2, which is the cleanest and most environmentally friendly form of extraction.” Though navigating such a volatile industry where new research and laws continually change, Phegley and fellow co-founder Desi McKinnon find the challenges exciting. Their biggest goal in sight? “We are hoping this year hemp and CBD are formally acknowledged as plant medicine.”
