At the tender age of 14, Wayne Gregory was tasked with designing and building a backpack as part of a Boy Scouts activity. That pack would get Gregory his first job in a budding San Diego company, and he would eventually embark on a successful career designing and making tents, sleeping bags and of course some of the finest backpacks on the market under the eponymous moniker Gregory Packs. Releasing this week in the US, the Sunbird Series is a nod to Gregory’s beginnings and his first company, Sunbird.

Already a successful line in Asia, the Sunbird Series imparts the same high level of quality and premium materials found in the brand’s more technical offerings. Comprised of a messenger bag, tote and three backpack models, each bag is intended for versatility—for everyday city use, but able to hold its own on day hikes. The Trailblazer, Kletter Day and Sunrise Bag all feature Cordura reinforcements in high stress points for added durability and wear-resistance. Internal organization is on the simple side, with just a few zippered pockets inside for valuables. The canvas exterior material meanwhile has a sturdy feel without getting too heavy. All of the leather accents and zipper pulls are made of noticeably high-quality US-sourced chrome-tanned leather. Best of all, each of the colorways Gregory opted for are timeless—especially the vintage rust—calling to mind hiking packs of the ’70s.
