Hurley + Cryptik Phantom Boardshort
The artist takes his complex, inspired designs to the world of swim apparel
For years now, graffiti and street artist Cryptik has placed his philosophically-driven, ornate works within public spaces around California. Further, he has sought to spearhead a greater movement with his pieces, encouraging viewers to gaze further into refreshing takes on iconic imagery and pull forth his global religious, cultural and linguistic references. A long time admirer of the LA-based creator, Hurley‘s Creative Director Ryan Hurley commissioned Cryptik to create a unique work within his pool—a frequent gathering spot for friends and family. The ensuing piece, pulling from references to Hurley’s favorite song “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley, was so well received, that Hurley decided to take the commission a step further.
Hurley invited Cryptik to make a pattern for their ever popular boardshort line Phantom. Inspired by a Balinese Batik pattern that Cryptik viewed while in Indonesia, though the poetic translation of it is entirely the artist’s, the Hurley Phantom Cryptik shorts are now set to hit the market and carry a serene complexity worthy of anyone looking for a style upgrade on the water.
Cryptik’s immersion into the culture of Bali, Indonesia stands most important to the inspiration behind the pattern. Within, he tries to represent a union of the culture he experienced and the ancient relics he bore witness to. All the while, he calls upon his themes of global spiritual awakening. There are plenty of notable artistic collaborations out there, especially in the world of apparel. However, this stands out as a product of cultural resonance and a devotion to respecting the intricacies of inspiration.
The exclusive Hurley + Cryptik collaboration will be available at Hurley online 7 January 2016, where it will retail for $70.
