Levi’s Vintage Clothing and Made & Crafted Fall 2013
A closer look at the many textures included in collections for the colder seasons
While we’re enjoying the warm weather here in NYC, we’ve been thinking about fall fashion since seeing the heavily textured FW13 collections for Levi’s sub-brands Levi’s Made & Crafted and Levi’s Vintage Clothing earlier this past spring. And now, as the collections continue to land on store shelves, we’ve decided to take a closer look. From hand-dyed wool to vintage recreations and surprisingly convincing washes, the following five pieces feature strong physical and visual textures.
Levi’s Made & Crafted Wool Coat
The absolute standout from Levi’s Made & Crafted was, for us, the bare bones Wool Coat. The indigo Italian wool is peppered with varying shades of creams and blues that create an almost micro-camouflage. As for the actual design, it’s perfectly simple. The unstructured, shawl-collared coat is lined with a soft blanket for an extremely comfortable fit and feel. Basically it’s like a well-tailored comforter, thrown over your shoulder.
Levi’s Made & Crafted Gradual Crew
While the collection as a whole is strong in texture, the Gradual Crew sweater stands out with a single gradient that extends the garment’s entire length. Available in two color gradients (brown and green), the soft lamb’s wool sweater is thick enough to wear over a T-shirt but not too thick to be worn over a button down.
LVC 1940s Reversible Leather Jacket
Our favorite piece of outerwear in the Detroit-inspired Boom Town collection is this Italian-made 1940s Reversible Jacket. One side features suede soft leather and the other; a khaki-colored cotton twill. Copied detail for detail from a piece found in the Levi’s archives, the leather varies in levels of distressing for an authentically burnished look. The slimmed fit is aided by adjustable side straps and a raised rear cut that give the jacket a vintage motorcycle jacket feel.
LVC Baseball Sweater
Another successful remake, the knit Baseball Sweater looks like something your dad wore as a kid, paired with jeans and a pair of Chucks. Made of 100% cotton fleece, the half-sleeve piece is really just a heavier-weight baseball T-shirt—although it definitely belongs in the fall collection. The unfinished hem on the body gives the extremely soft garment a great lived-in look.
LVC 1967 505 Jeans
Principally speaking, denim is best bought raw and broken-in over time through dedicated wear. However, for some untold reason, there was an uncanny draw to the selvedge 1967 505 Jean in the Boom Boom wash. Another piece from the Motor City’s Boom Town collection, these classically slim-fitting jeans feature blown-out knees, light whiskers, authentically patched holes and all. While it may be difficult to tell everyone you actually earned all the wear and tear, you’ll be hard up to find a more convincing wash.
