The Bad Behavior Silk Scarf by Nottene
NYC-based illustrator Kimberly Ellen Hall takes the formality out of the accessory with her hand drawn designs
Last week at Cool Hunting + Story‘s second annual Pitch Night, we heard from over 40 different designers and makers over the course of almost five hours. With surprise guest judge Whoopi Goldberg adding to the pressure to make an impression, we heard from some stellar new talent—like illustrator (and Central St Martins alum) Kimberly Ellen Hall, who boasts the Whitney Museum and Coach as previous clients and is now teaching part-time at Parsons. Fascinated by textiles, she previously ran an Etsy shop where she sold vintage clothing and accessories by illustrating them (and sending along the original artwork to customers who purchase the piece). Recently, she’s concentrated her efforts on cards, prints and now, scarves, through her line Nottene.
“I am really interested in telling stories through drawing,” Hall tells CH after showing her new scarves at Pitch Night. “I do use words sometimes too, but I try to use context and juxtaposition of image and object to create the message. I also love to make people laugh! Actually I feel like my biggest success so far has been making Whoopi Goldberg laugh at Pitch Night.” The Bad Behavior silk scarf, covered with illustrations of liquor bottles, cigarettes and Converse sneakers, removes any formality that the luxe accesory can sometimes inspire—making it a cheeky addition to any outfit.
Nottene scarves are available for $200 from Hall’s Etsy shop as well as her own website. (For those on a tighter budget, her unique “shadow” printed cyanotype bandanas are priced at $35 and equally curious).
